The American Dream is Dead, blame Republicans

The American Dream means having the opportunity to improve your life through hard work, education, and entrepreneurship, but it is weaker than it used to be.

Inflation was up 4% in May.

Tariffs are often passed along to businesses and consumers in the form of higher prices.

Higher prices for everyday goods

Tariffs can increase the cost of imported:

  • Electronics
  • Clothing and shoes
  • Furniture
  • Appliances
  • Building materials
  • Auto parts

If retailers or manufacturers pass those costs on, consumers pay more at the checkout.

Many vehicles and their components are imported or contain imported parts. Tariffs on steel, aluminum, or auto parts can increase manufacturing costs, which may lead to higher prices for both new and used vehicles.

Some foods are imported directly, while others rely on imported ingredients, packaging, fertilizer, or farming equipment. Tariffs can increase costs throughout the supply chain, contributing to higher food prices for some products.

Increased costs for American businesses.  Many U.S. companies rely on imported raw materials or components. If those inputs become more expensive because of tariffs, businesses may:

  • Raise prices.
  • Reduce hiring.
  • Delay investment.
  • Accept lower profits.

When one country imposes tariffs, others may respond with tariffs of their own. This can make American exports more expensive overseas, potentially reducing sales for U.S. industries such as agriculture and manufacturing.

Housing costs have risen much faster than incomes in many parts of the country.

College is more expensive and often comes with significant debt.

Wealth inequality has increased over recent decades. Nothing is being trickled down.

Studies suggest economic mobility—the chance that children earn more than their parents—has declined compared with the mid-20th century.

In the 1950s, it often meant owning a home, supporting a family on one income, and expecting each generation to do better than the last.

Today, it may mean financial stability, career flexibility, starting a business, or achieving personal goals rather than following a single model of success.

Republicans have generally supported lower taxes, particularly for businesses and higher-income individuals.  Tax cuts disproportionately benefit wealthier households.  Lower tax revenues can contribute to larger federal deficits if spending isn’t reduced.  Future spending cuts to offset deficits may affect public services that many Americans rely on.

Many Republicans have supported reducing the federal government’s role in healthcare and have sought changes to or repeal of the Affordable Care Act.

Critics argue this can:

  • Increase insurance premiums for some people.
  • Leave fewer people with health insurance.
  • Raise out-of-pocket medical costs.

Republican lawmakers have often proposed reducing the growth of federal spending.

Critics argue this can affect:

  • Food assistance.
  • Medicaid.
  • Housing assistance.
  • Education funding.

Many Republicans oppose raising the federal minimum wage and support fewer labor regulations.

Critics argue this can:

  • Keep wages lower for some workers.
  • Reduce worker bargaining power.

What do economists generally conclude?

While economists differ on the overall value of tariffs as a trade policy, there is broad agreement on a few points:

  • Tariffs generally increase prices for the imported goods they target, at least in the short to medium term.
  • Consumers and businesses often bear a significant share of those higher costs.
  • Some domestic industries may benefit from protection, while others that rely on imported inputs may be harmed.

The overall impact depends on factors such as which goods are tariffed, whether domestic producers can meet demand, how businesses adjust, and whether other countries retaliate. In practice, tariffs tend to create both winners and losers across the economy.
